Yara or María Lionza was an Indian of great beauty. Some stories indicate that near the rivers there was a great snake that was madly in love with her and kidnapped her; the spirits annoyed by this act made her swell so much to the point of exploding and dying, after this Yara became the owner and Goddess of rivers and lagoons, protective mother of nature and queen of love.
